FRIDAYâFEBRUARY 27
1
The police showed up at Healerina on Friday morning.
Juana, dressed as usual in her bib-front denims, had stopped by with a clutch of dream catchers. They were proving a popular item and sheâd brought some new ones to replenish the stock.
(âOne could wish sheâd try a different ensemble,â) Pard said. Heâd taken up his usual position by the window and Juana was hanging over him, looking out.
Why? Itâs her signature look.
(âWell, then, one can at least hope she owns more than one pair.â)
âA sheriffâs car just pulled up,â Juana said.
Daley joined her. Sure enough, a white patrol car emblazoned with Imperial County Sheriff in bright green letters had nosed into the curb in front of the shop. A buff-looking, dark-haired guy in a dark green uniform unfolded himself from the unit and stepped toward the door.
âThis looks like official business,â Daley said, feeling a touch of the jitters.
Had the folks sheâd scammed in Coachella tracked her to Nespodee Springs? One of them might have spotted her on their way to or from the spa.
âThatâs Sam Alvarez,â Juana said.
âYou know him? How?â
âOver the years Iâve gotten to know most of the department.â
(âFrom which side of the bars, I wonder.â)
âOfficially heâs a sheriffâs lieutenant but we call him âdeputy,ââ Juana added. âDonât worry. Heâs good people.â
âHe may be, but Iâm pretty sure heâs not here to buy a dream catcher.â
He stepped inside and looked around. âLooks like you made it through the earthquake okay.â
âGood morning, Deputy Alvarez,â Juana said.
He looked surprised as he smiled. âJuana. I didnât expect to find you here.â
âIâm everywhere,â she said. âYou should know that by now.â
âIâm here to see the owner.â He looked at Daley. âWould that be you?â
âThat would be me. Is something wrong?â
âDepends.â
(âUh-oh.â)
âOn what?â
âOn whether youâre practicing medicine without a license.â
So soon? I knew this would happen, but this is only our third day open.
(âHas to be Doc Llewelyn. He stops by yesterday and the storm troopers stop by today. My statement contains a logical fallacy, by the way.â)
A what?
(âWell, you seeââ)
Later.
Struggling to keep the disappointment from her expressionâsheâd liked Doc LlewelynâDaley said, âWherever did you get that idea?â
âWell, the name of your business does have the word âhealerâ in it, and the sheriff heard from the State Department of Consumer Affairs that they received a complaint about how you might be practicing without a license.â
ââMight beâ?â
âWell, the caller said he wasnât sure what you were doing, but he suspected a problem.â
âAnd just who was this caller?â
âA doctor in Pomona.â
(âThen itâs not Llewelyn after all. Estelle said she was from Pomona.â)
Iâm guessing she went back to her GI guy and told him I cured her.
(âYou never said that.â)
But that doesnât mean Estelle didnât. Wishful thinking, you know. And her specialist wouldnât have scoped her again alreadyâit hasnât been two days yet.
Though hardly welcome, this was kind of a relief. Sheâd known all along that, given enough time and opportunity, sheâd raise the ire of the medical community. Sheâd rather deal with this than a swindling charge.
